Fun Fact Friday: Retailers Now Have More Equal Playing Field

This week was important for the retail industry.  The United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of overturning the outdated standard set in the 1992 decision that prevented states from collecting sales tax for online purchases. The decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair signals the need to bring the law into the 21st century.

Retailers consider this a critical step in leveling the playing field with online-only sellers. Lobbying groups have been advocating for “sales tax fairness” for more than a decade.

States will now be free to collect sales taxes from online retailers.  Many states are sure to cash in on this easy money as soon as possible.
